ESR8 Academic training in EPFL
Date: March - June 2016

ESR8 did his academic secondment at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) aimed at carrying out experimental tests of suspended sediment transport in free surface channels. He has used ultrasound velocity profile (UVP) method in the Laboratory of Hydraulic Constructions (LHC). The aim was to understand through experiment al analysis, the influence of suspended matter on the turbulence statistics in a tilting recirculating open channel flow. This experiment was not completely successful. Although it served as a training period for ESR8 in learning how to carry out laboratory work, from a scientific point of view, it was concluded that UVP may not be a viable instrument to measure this flow condition, because the measurement of statistics was highly dependent on instantaneous concentration which was not controllable in the experiments.
