Measuring techniques for turbulent open-channel flows - River and reservoir hydrodynamics and morphodynamics
Summer School & Workshop at IST (Lisbon, Portugal)
Date: 27-30 July 2015

The event included a summer school entitled “Measuring techniques for turbulent open-channel flows” and a workshop entitled "River and reservoir hydrodynamics and morphodynamics".

The summer school targeted MSc students and PhD students initiating their formation. The school program included lectures by experienced researchers in experimental methods in fluid and sediment mechanics. The school provided a hands-on experience on instrumentation suitable to measure fluid and sediment velocities in open-channel flows, namely Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV) and high speed video for Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV). Laboratory practice at the Hydraulics and Environment Laboratory of IST was conducted.

The workshop program included presentations of all Fellows of SEDITRANS on hydrodynamics of vegetated channels, mechanics of sediment transport in rivers reservoirs and coastal environments, turbulence in free-surface flows and modelling two-phase flows composed of fluid and granular material. Invited speakers in related topics also contributed to generate a forum for multidisciplinary discussion on hydrodynamics and morphodynamics of flows with mobile boundaries.

The event was attended by all 12 ESRs and the 2 ERs of SEDITRANS that had started work at that time, as well as by 15 more researchers from Instituto Superior Técnico, EPFL, UCL and other Institutions of Portugal.
